This December mother and son duo (Achala & Kishan) will be taking on an adventure, with 106 other self-funded participants in Rickshaw Run 2023, travelling across India from Chitrakoot to Kutch in 36 Rickshaws. This journey will cover over 2000 km in 12 days, looking to raise £500,000 to support the refurbishment of a dental unit at Arogyadham in Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Kishan completed the Rickshaw Run 2019, which raised over £250,000 for Sewa UK, and over the last year has been helping to organise Rickshaw Run 2023! During Rickshaw Run 2019 he was able to visit several previous Sewa UK projects, seeing for himself how the money has been used and the children that have been helped.

A rickshaw (or tuk tuk) is a 3 wheeled vehicle found across Asia, generally used for short trips around town. With a top speed of 40km/h, three wheels, no doors or seatbelt and drivers constantly horning for no apparent reason, what could possibly go wrong?! Once you factor in the heat, uncomfortable seats, and the rickshaws notorious reputation for breaking down, you can understand why this is starting to look like a bit of a challenge.

The Project
Over 35,000 children are born with a cleft defect annually in India. Over half of those are either unable to afford treatments or are completely unaware that this can be treated at all. The operations that take place are life changing for the children and allow them to integrate into normal society without any associated stigma.

The facility provides FREE or very affordable cleft and palate surgery to support the 500 surrounding villages. The building will have 6 dental surgeries on the 1st floor. On the ground floor, it will have 1 dental surgery, 1 operation theatre and 1 dental lab including waiting areas, offices and washroom facilities.

Sewa UK is 100 per cent volunteer-operated, therefore all your donations will go directly to the cause without any admin costs.
