India Covid-19

As India begun to recuperate from the social and economic losses of the initial COVID-19 wave in 2020, a second, deadlier wave has hit hard. In recent weeks, India has seen a six-fold increase in daily cases, and this not yet reaching its projected peak. With 3 million+ active cases in the country, the impact can be seen across the country. Amongst this, the worst affected social group is the urban poor and slum dwellers. Working with Sewa International [a global network in over 35 countries], SewaUK has launched several activities to support India during this crisis. The on-ground support covers

  • Awareness - a pool of verified, well-sourced information for awareness. An information campaign to counter the existing chain of mis-information, creating FAQs on COVID-19, raising awareness on the importance of vaccinations, symptoms and preventative care.

  • Essentials - 180+ volunteers, and 20+ partners working on distribution of essentials. Distributing a kit of essentials for daily wage earners in urban areas to serve their necessities including, food, masks and sanitisers, sanitary products and basic medicines.
  • Covidsewa.com - a digital portal for live, verified and detailed information about COVID-19 resources such as vaccination centres, oxygen supplies, medicines, beds, and more across 100+ cities of India.

  • Vaccinations - working with local municipal bodies, ngo partners, and volunteers on vaccination drives. We are strengthening the vaccination efforts of the government with vaccination drives across urban slums and COVID hotspot areas, in partnership with local municipalities

  • Oxygen Concentrators - Providing 1000+ oxygen concentrators to strengthen the capacity of existing health systems across Budget Private Hospitals, COVID Care centres, Government Hospitals & Private Isolation Centres.

Funds Raised

Sewa UK’s India COVID Appeal had raised over £250,000 in a matter of days
and an initial consignment of 62 Oxygen Concentrators had made its way to India.

  • SIB has the reach to every corner of the country through various non-profits we work with. We always try to achieve the last mile connectivity in as many regions as possible.

On the Ground Support & Expertise

  • Sewa International Bharat’s expertise lies in responding to crisis/ disasters by collaborating with various non-profits and volunteers working on the ground.
  • In this COVID situation we have also partnered with various non-profit organisations to set-up isolation centers, to test patients in remote villages, and set-up isolation centers in Tier 2 cities.
  • Sewa Aarogyam, our Mobile Health Van services continue to serve amid the second wave of the global pandemic and the lockdown.
  • The team of our Doctors and supporting staff are providing affordable health services in the remote mountain region of Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand.

Breadth of Provision

  • Essential kits with dry food, toiletries, sanitation products
  • Setting up of online helplines, mental counselling services
  • Provision of critical medical equipment such as Oxygen Concentrators, Covid Medicines, PPE Kits, N95 masks, BiPAP machines & Ventilators.
  • We are also supporting Covid Care/Isolation Centres for mild-moderate Covid patients to ensure low-cost/prompt recovery of poor patients.
  • The depth of service ensures systematic strengthening, long-term sustainability while also providing an immediate layer of protection.

Equipment Bank

  • A dedicated team is working on setting-up an Equipment Bank. The equipment purchased will be the asset of SIB.
  • The Equipment Bank will provide additional equipment to the needy hospitals/medical centres for building long-term critical medical infrastructure capabilities based on local needs.
  • SIB also plans to lend the items to needy health care units or individuals on need basis in case there is delay in identifying beneficiaries
  • 6.9 lakh [100,000] patients, as reported on May 4*, need oxygen and it is increasing.
  • As widely reported, there is no dearth of oxygen production. But there is a shortage in the delivery mechanism of oxygen as oxygen cylinders are limited in number. SIB are addressing this shortage through Oxygen Concentrators which can deliver required oxygen on premises without delivery issues.

Rehabiliation

  • eMedical Center (Direct Help): Provide medical guidance to the mild COVID affected patients.
  • Counselling Centers (Direct Help): Provide psychological counseling to the COVID affected persons.
  • Education Aid (Indirect Help): Provide education aid (school/college) to the children whose parents are affected by COVID and lost life/job.
  • Grief-Counselling Center (Indirect Help): Provide counseling to family members who had lost their dear ones due to COVID.
  • As a part of rehabilitation, we plan to ramp-up infrastructure of selected health care centers, which will benefit the community as a whole.
