Hope for the future: Educating underprivileged children in India

Sewa UK’s Education Aid programme seeks to provide underprivileged children in India with a life transforming opportunity and what we in the UK consider a basic human right – the right to an education.

Education is a basic right for children everywhere and of vital importance for the development of a country. Education revolutionises a child’s whole life, bringing a permanent change to the child and their entire family.

The challenge:
UN research shows, that almost 18million children in South Asia do not attend a school. The biggest obstacle to education is poverty. Girls in the poorest 20 per cent of households have the least chance of getting an education: they are 3.5 times more likely to be out of school than girls in the richest households and four times more likely to be out of school as boys in the richest households.

Children remain out of school for a variety of reasons, including cost. Social and cultural barriers to education are also common. In many countries, educating girls is widely perceived as being of less value than educating boys. And children with disabilities across the world face far more limited opportunities than their nondisabled peers.

Our Education Aid programme seeks to address these challenges.

Our goal:
Our programme funds the education of 550 children in 259 schools, across 13 states of India. Our ambition is to fund 5,000 children across the length and breadth of India by 2015.

How much does it cost?
You can sponsor a child’s education for a year for £30.

What’s unique about our scheme?

  • We work in partnership with Sewa Bharati, which is one of India’s largest NGOs and runs hundreds of schools across the length and breadth of the country. As a result of their extensive network they’re able to identify children requiring your financial help.
  • We believe that each and every child deserves an education. We do not discriminate on the grounds of race, religion, or caste – students are selected purely on the basis of need.
  • We encourage all our donors to visit the schools that we support. We can facilitate local travel arrangements as per your convenience.
